Programs for children

Children are the most vulnerable victims of violence. Those who witness violence, as well as those who experience it directly, can bear scars that last a lifetime. Further, experience with violence at an early age often leads individuals to violent behavior as adults. Tubman Family Alliance offers a wide range of programs for children who have witnessed or been victims of abuse. These programs address the effects of violence, while meeting the educational, health care, and recreational needs of children and young people.

  • Staff- and client-shared child care
  • On-site tutoring
  • Immunization and wellness checks
  • Safety planning
  • Computer access
  • Activities and field trips
  • Children's advocacy and support groups
  • On-site early childhood development screenings
  • On-site mental health therapy
  • Access to school supplies
  • Partnership with Big Brothers/Big Sisters Minneapolis

Services are provided by on-staff advocates, educators, child development specialists and licensed psychologists, and by trained volunteer mentors, other volunteers, and representatives of other social service agencies.

Family and Child/Youth Advocates serve children, women and families who are working on relationships, life skills, and family systems. They support families by providing early assessment and intervention, if desired, parenting and children's educational groups, and advocacy. Resources and referral assistance is given to any family working with Tubman Family Alliance programs in order to provide accessible and safe programs and services.
