How to help a friend who is hurting others
If you think someone you care about is being abusive:
- Keep yourself safe. Do not get into the middle of a violent situation. Find someone at your school who is trained to intervene or call the police. Do not confront that person if you believe consequences for doing so could be harmful to you. If you get hurt, you will not be able to help anyone.
- Tell that person you feel uncomfortable when he or she insults or puts down someone else.
- Tell that person his or her behavior bothers you.
- Do not agree with any statements that suggest the other person brought on the abuse. Remind him or her that there is no excuse for domestic violence.
- Tell that person you care about him or her and contact a domestic violence agency for help and information about abusive relationships.
Remember, overcoming abusive behaviors takes time and a lot of hard work. Do not expect changes overnight, but continue to offer support.
