Our history

On January 1, 2002, Family Violence Network of Lake Elmo, Minnesota, and Harriet Tubman Center of Minneapolis consolidated to become Tubman Family Alliance, a single new agency serving the broader Twin Cities metropolitan community.

The joining of these two organizations was based on significant compatibility in many service offerings, populations served, and budgets, as well as complementary geographic service areas. More importantly both organizations shared similar visions to serve individuals in crisis and act as an agent of social change to work toward the eradication of violence in the greater community.

The new agency has achieved significant economies of scale in administration, fundraising, and educational outreach. A new strategic operational plan was created, led by staff members from both agencies. The merger also served as a platform for an enhanced effort to educate the community about the issue of family violence.

Thanks to the strong histories of both merging entities, Tubman Family Alliance has an extensive network of partnerships with both public and private nonprofit agencies and institutions. In addition, it has referral relationships with scores of governmental and nonprofit agencies, law enforcement agencies, legal service providers, crisis lines, landlords, employers, educational providers, health care organizations, churches, cultural groups and others who refer individuals to Tubman Family Alliance or who provide services and counsel to participants.

Harriet Tubman Center

The Harriet Tubman Center, established in 1976, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, existed to build communities free of violence. It was a family-violence prevention and intervention resource agency that educated community members about their roles in family abuse prevention and supported all family members in building violence-free lives.

Harriet Tubman Center worked to educate each of us in prevention, help families build healthy relationships without abuse, and advocate to change systems.

Family Violence Network

Family Violence Network, established in 1981 and based in Lake Elmo, Minnesota, was a full-service domestic abuse agency serving the East Metro Region of the Twin Cities. It offered immediate safety and resources for families in crisis. It started primarily as a legal advocacy program.

Its mission was, “To change lives by working to end violence in relationships through prevention and support services, and to change communities through information, education and advocacy.”

It's vision was, “We see a world in which people treat themselves and others with respect and caring; believe in themselves; and live free from fear of violence in their relationships.”
